The ASF Network (lawyers without borders) and ADEFHO condemn the assassination of journalist and human Rights activist Eric Ohena Lembembe in Cameroon.

The ASF Network and ADEFHO denounce and strongly condemn the brutal murder of Eric OHENA LEMBEMBE, executive director of the Cameroonian Association Foundation for AIDS, (CAMFAIDS), which most likely happened on the night of 12th to 13th of July 2013.

Eric Ohena Lembembe was a gay activist and a journalist at "Erase 76crimes." This crime can only be considered to be in connection with his involvement in defending rights for the homosexuals.

One of his friends, who was worried to have not heard from Eric, went to his home in the morning of July 16th 2013. Victim of torture, his body lay on the bed, naked, burned with an iron especially on the face and torso. He was strangled, one foot and his hands appeared to be broken. He also suffered abuse on his private parts. He was so unrecognizable due to the torture he suffered that the morgue could not accept the family’s request to see the body.

The murder of Eric Ohena Lembembe comes after several attacks on the offices of human rights defenders, including those campaigning for equal rights for LGBTI. On the 16th of June 2013, the office of Michel Togué who represents people who are accused of engaging in same sex relations was robbed. On June 23rd 2013, it was the head office of Alternatives Cameroon association which works especially for the protection of LGBTI people, which was burned.
The ASF Network and ADEFHO also reveal that the police did not secure the crime scene nor did they take any photos of the crime scene.

Alice NKOM for ADEFHO and Saskia Ditisheim for the ASF network have been commissioned by Marie-Thérèse OHENA LEMBEMBE, Eric’s mother, to defend him and the interests of his family.

The ASF and ADEFHO network ask that this sordid crime does not go unpunished and that the police and judicial authorities launch an investigation and find the perpetrators of this act and bring them to justice.
